Big Bang Data

Project
Big Bang Data was a major Somerset House exhibition exploring how data is reshaping the world around us. The show was a critical success and its run was extended from three months to five months.
Role
As Head of Making at Future Cities Catapult, I founded and built the Making Lab: a 12-person team of researchers, designers and developers. Commissioned by Somerset House, I led the team in creating an interactive exhibit that let visitors use real data to shape a future London and see how data can inform urban decision-making in tangible ways.
Technology
We built a data model of London that let visitors use sliders, dials and buttons to explore trade-offs across transport, housing and water allocation. The data came from real sources including TfL, the Greater London Authority Data Store and Thames Water. Arduino-connected controls fed into a web frontend and a large 3D city projection, creating a tactile public-facing data experience.

Outcomes
